Chapter 3: Investigations

"I have three assumptions of this case." L explained as he dumped five sugar cubes in his coffee, "The first is that they committed suicide. The probability is just under five percent. However, it would not hurt to be one-hundred percent sure."
"What makes you think they committed suicide?" Jo-Jo asked, "Near said they died from blows to the head. How can you inflict that on your own?"

L didn't rush to answer. Instead, he sipped his coffee, made a face, and dropped seven more sugar cubes in his mug, "As I've said, there is a five percent chance. A detective must always assume one commits suicide and simply made it SEEM that someone killed him or her."
I nodded in understanding and ate some of my Vegan chocolate cake, "I guess that makes sense. What're the other two assumptions?"

"The second is just above ten percent," L held up a photograph. We all looked at it: it was a chubby young boy, maybe 18 or 19. He had straight hair of a brown so dark it was one shade away from black and eyes the color of irises. "This boy is Robert Johannes. He is 19 years old and rather bright. Apparently, he is known for his explosive yet innocent nature. It is possible he was infuriated by something the small family did and murdered them. He takes advanced calculus and college-level science and English, so I doubt he does not have the intelligence to plan out the murder."

Harper nodded and tucked some hair behind her ear, "What's the third?"

"The third is about thirty-two percent. It is Mrs. Snyder's former husband," L held up another photograph, "Thomas Snyder. He had a very bad argument with Mrs. Snyder a fortnight before her death, therefore it seems likely that they were killed by Thomas."
"It DOES seem likely." I nodded, "So, let me guess, we're going to check out the bodies to see if they really committed suicide."

L granted me a small, timid smile, "Close. The funeral will taken place a week from tomorrow. This gives us eight days. We have plenty of time to investigate the bodies. First, I would like to interrogate our two suspects."
"I vote this Johannes chap," Jo-Jo said, "You said it yourself. He's just above ten percent. Better get rid of the people you don't suspect as much. That way, we can focus on the most likely murderer."

"Very well," L nodded, popping some gumdrops in his mouth, "We shall do that tomorrow morning. It is already 9:00 p.m. You should all rest."
I smirked at the bags under his eyes, "L, when was the last time YOU slept?" L blinked in surprise and thought a moment, chewing his thumbnail, "...Three weeks ago."

I felt myself blush. That was when I had comforted him, right after Mello had had his memories erased.
"Well," I said, trying to sound normal, "You should sleep, too. We can't have you falling asleep on the job."
"A cup of coffee, and I will be right as rain." L said dismissively. Sammy sighed and grabbed L's mug, keeping it out of his reach, "Alice is right, Emo. You can't stick to coffee. Ya need sleep."

L sighed, giving up. Then, he grinned cheekily and said, "I doubt it will happen, as there is only one bedroom in this suite."
"You and Alice could share a bed!" Harper piped up. My face turned the color of a pepper as I smacked her with my tail.
"We'll ALL share a bed," Jo-Jo said in a firm voice, "Because I say so."

"Will you hurry up?!" Harper called as she braided her hair, "I didn't know you took a shower every evening!"
"So? I took a shower, too!" Jo-Jo protested as she pushed the two beds together. I chuckled and waited patiently. I didn't know what drove me to do it, but I had put on my nicest nightdress: baggy, like all my clothes, and a pale gray color. Sammy wiggled her eyebrows at me as she slipped on her cow-patterns PJ's, "You gonna bust a move?"
"No!" I whispered furiously, "I'm not completely crazy, you know!"

Just then, L came out of the bathroom wearing dark blue sweatpants and a white buttoned shirt. Harper took one look at him and exploded into peals of laughter. We all stared at her.
"...Where is your Barbie mind leading you now?" Jo-Jo asked.
"Nowhere," Harper managed, "Just...he never seems to wear anything other than white and blue."
"I like blue and white." L said bluntly.
"Oh, well." Sammy shrugged and climbed in the 'bed', Jo-Jo and Harper cuddling close to her.
I scowled. I knew what they were trying to do. They were trying to make L or me bust a move by being close to each other. L seemed to notice this too, since his cheeks flushed. "Ladies first," He said politely, gesturing to the bed. I nodded and climbed in. He was practically on my tail (so to speak).

"Goodnight, sleep tight." Sammy giggled, turning off the light.

I was frozen, not sure what to do. I could feel L's chest on my back, and his soft breathing behind my ear. I decided to pretend I was asleep until I was sure he was off in Dream Land.
I didn't have to wait for long. About 10 minutes later, his breathing was softer. Just out of curiosity, I looked over my shoulder. L looked really peaceful in his sleep. His raven hair curtained his face, which was almost white in the moonlight. Before I could stop myself, my hand pushed some hair out of his eyes. He must've felt it, because he was moving the second my finger touched his silky hair. I yelped under my breath and turned back. Before he stopped moving, L put an arm on my side, almost protectively. I felt my face heat up.

Then, with joy in my heart, I fell asleep.
Man, I'm tired! :faint: Please comment!!
