Dozens of feet under the surface, just above Mr. Borgognoni Vimercati's office, was a small opening made by a familiar green-eyed, blonde girl. She and her friends had faked their deaths to avoid suspicion, but right now, they had had enough.

"No more trust." A fanged girl said.
"No more chances." A hairy girl drenched in water piped up.
"And no more mercy." The blonde's voice was cold as ice.
"He's just another enemy--" A golden-eyed, cat-like girl started.

"I feel utterly ridiculous!" Alice practically shrieked as Harper dumped more blush on her olive cheeks. Sammy and Jo-Jo, Alice's elder sisters, were biting their lips to keep from laughing. The four were driving in their own, personal van that Watari had been kind enough to give them. This was one of the few times L was not patrolling the human world with his female friends; he had nine small cases to finish, and if he didn't finish them soon, he would've received complaints.

Chapter 1: Back from the Dead

Five days had passed since the elimination of Giambe's enemies. Mello had spent those days killing more and more people. There were no exceptions. Anyone who opposed Giambe Borgognoni Vimercati was punished. That was a fact.

The old man continued his job as a lawyer, though underneath that heartfelt smile and sincere eyes lay unsatisfiable greed for money and power. He did his cases, sure, but not honestly. He did it in any manner than assured his victory. The judge wasn't so stupid as to not notice, but one look from Mello silenced him.

Rivera fell to the ground, exhausted and bleeding. Alice and L had been battling him for the past hour, and for reasons they couldn't fathom, the murderer had come to the local lighthouse. L's ankle was twisted and Alice had been stabbed, but it wasn't serious compared to Rivera.

The rock slid down the hill and landed gracefully on the parking lot. Jo-Jo hopped off and slipped off her bat necklace. Instantly, her wings sprouted from her back, her hazel eyes turned crimson, and fangs protruded from her lips. "I can smell his blood from here," She shuddered, "He drinks too much."
"Let's just get this over with!" Harper jumped off her rock and ran towards the bank. Jo-Jo watched her friend go with a sigh. Then, she shoved her hands in her jeans pockets and followed.

Empty sweet dishes, candy wrappers, and crushed soft drink cans littered the floor, the entire series of SAW were unceremoniously strewn all over the sofa, and the bowls of sundaes were melting on the coffee table.

We left the next day. None of us said anything about L's little mercy killing. I think preferred it that way: he washed and changed, but he didn't talk to anyone, not even me. For some reason, that was worse than anything else. I loved L, and I couldn't imagine what he was going through.

This time, Sammy drove. We were in the car for the entire day except for a rest stop. We were in Rome by twilight. I don't really remember much from that day. I don't think we encountered any monsters; then again, maybe we did. I was so worried about L, my body was on autopilot.

Let me tell you: after a one-hour-shower, I felt a hundred percent better. I guess I hadn't really allowed myself to think how dirty and scared I'd been until we were finally safe within the Tennysons' walls.

All X had to do was get him out into the Empitness alone with him. And then, he would drag the body back, blaming it on some hideous beast.

Prologue

Michael Keehl stood in the Italian office, slipping on the last piece of his thick armor. A tall, robust figure was turned away with a stony expression and twinkling eyes. The curtains were drawn, making the room seem almost underground.
"...You made mistakes in your past...trusting L...thinking you could succeed him...but all of that's behind you, isn't it?" The figure asked, some of his graying hair falling over his eye.

"Yes." Mello said tonelessly.

"You are MY successor now. You know that, don't you?"

"...I do."
The old man smiled coldly and asked, "From now on, will you obey my every order?"

"...I will."

"Will you eliminate my enemies?"

"I will."

The old man smiled darkly and held a red diamond with the Borgognoni Vimercati family crest on it. Mello blinked at it. He knew that once he put that on, it would make him property of this man's family. It included one of his five new-found enemies, but he quickly brushed that thought aside.
"And will you kill my niece, L, and their friends?" The old man asked, ready to throw it away if the boy said no.

Mello blinked again. Then, he took the small diamond and pressed it against his forehead. It stuck there instantly, almost as though it were alive.

"I was wondering when you were gonna ask that." Mello's blank expression melted into a cruel smile.

The game was on.
